Tutora helps students and families find the best local tutors for lessons in any subject and any age. Our aim is to help as many families as possible, whilst bringing trust and transparency to the tuition industry.
We do this by collecting a huge amount of data on student-tutor interactions. Messaging, lesson bookings and student reviews all go through our platform, which allows our algorithms to then place the best tutors at the top of the search results, whilst removing those who we don’t feel offer a truly great service. This system creates great matches and our commission based model better aligns us with students, who never pay any upfront fees.
Crowdfunding was a natural choice for our business, as finding a tutor is a problem so many families now face, with one in four children having received tuition in the last three years. In April last year, 79 of you helped us raise £150k for a 10% equity share of the business. There was an incredible appetite to invest in the business, with the round being completed in just four days.
Since then, we’ve become the third largest tuition company in the UK. We’ve achieved 700% growth in our monthly revenue figures since our initial raise and we now have over 6,000 tutors (up from 1,400 in April), increasing our coverage across the UK. Our tutors are delivering thousands of lessons each month, helping families and students in need of educational support.
Our success has not only been recognised by our students, tutors and investors. We were recently finalists in TechNorth’s Northern Stars competition, which named us as one of the top 20 startups in the North. We have also been featured in many leading publications, including the Guardian, BBC, The Telegraph and TechRadar (India). Alongside all of this, we have partnered with Pearson, the international publishers, to develop the Tutors’ Guild series of tuition packs, designed to enable tutors to deliver the very best sessions.
Led by Mark and myself, our team has also grown. I was a former teacher and tutor, and I’m now the CEO and leads on product development, whilst overseeing the team. Mark, who was previously a technology analyst for a large investment firm, is our CTO, working alongside Mike, a senior developer, to further develop the platform. Faye, Amber and Harriet offer a wonderful service to our users, whilst Giorgio spreads the word far and wide as our marketing executive.
This growth has all come within 18 months of launch and our dream is to become the largest company in the UK’s £6bn private tutoring industry.
We will soon be returning to ask for your support once more. We have exciting plans afoot and look forward to unveiling those at the end of the month on Crowdcube. In the meantime, feel free to check out the site (https://tutora.co.uk) and to get in touch with any questions!
